Gottman Couples Therapy in San Diego
Welcome! I'm Dr. Anne Goshen and I'm here to help you and your partner build a more fulfilling relationship. I'm a Certified Gottman Method Therapist and a licensed clinical social worker, and I've been in private practice for more than 40 years. I see couples at my Scripps Ranch office, outdoors, or online across California.
As a Certified Gottman Method Therapist, an Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist, and an Imago Relationship Therapist, I am able to incorporate a comprehensive and integrated approach in helping you achieve a more fulfilling relationship.
From Couples Therapy & Marriage Counseling, all day Intensives and the Gottman Art & Science of Love Workshop, I provide a variety of services and resources for couples.
Three ways to work with me
Weekly couples therapy
80-minute sessions ($345), in person in San Diego or online in California, using the Gottman Method alongside the other approaches I draw on.
The Art & Science of Love workshop
The Gottmans' two-day couples workshop, which I lead outdoors in San Diego for up to five couples at a time, plus a private one-day version for a single couple. $975 per couple for the group workshop.
Couple’s Intensives
A half day (Strong Start, 3 hours) or a full day (Deep Dive, 6 hours) of focused therapy, for couples who want to work through something in depth rather than week by week.
From $775.
What Gottman couples therapy looks like with me
The Gottman Method comes from Drs. John and Julie Gottman's research into what happy, stable couples actually do. In practice it means we look at how the two of you talk, argue, repair and show care for each other, and then learn and practice specific skills for the places you get stuck.
I usually say I'm trained in Gottman therapy first, because it's the name most people know. I also draw on the Developmental Model, Relational Life Therapy, Imago and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, and I blend them depending on what will help a particular couple most.
Couples who have been together a long time
Some of the couples I see have been together for decades and feel they've drifted into living parallel lives. Others are facing a big change, such as an empty nest, retirement or a move. Whether you're looking for weekly sessions, a focused intensive or the two-day workshop, it's rarely too late to reconnect.
If you're engaged or recently married, I also work with couples preparing for marriage.
Why meet in person
Meeting in person gives the two of you time away from home and phones to slow down and listen to each other, and it lets me coach you in the moment, when a conversation starts to slip into an old pattern. If you prefer, we can meet outdoors in a quiet natural setting, an option I created during the early days of COVID. Online sessions remain available for couples in California.
About Dr. Goshen
I hold a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology and an MSW in Clinical Social Work, and I've been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California since 1980. Before private practice I worked with employees and physicians at Kaiser Permanente and with students and staff at Cal Poly. Read more about Dr. Goshen.
Questions couples ask
How do I find a Gottman therapist in San Diego?
The Gottman Institute's own Gottman Referral Network lists Gottman-trained therapists by area. I'm a Certified Gottman Method Therapist in Scripps Ranch, San Diego, and a good first step is a 25-minute consultation to see whether we're a good fit.
Is the Gottman assessment worth it?
The Gottman Relationship Checkup is a detailed online questionnaire each partner fills in separately. It gives the therapist a picture of a couple's strengths and challenges early on, so the work can focus where it matters most.
Book a consultation
If you're not sure where to start, book a 25-minute consultation. I'll listen to what's going on, explain the options I'd recommend, and the pros and cons of each.
